Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling fibers of asbestos, a heat-resistant and insulating material. Asbestosis is probably the single most important work-related lung disease. Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling dust-containing silica which is common mineral found in sand, quartz and various types of rock. 

Asbestosis fibers and dust containing silica penetrate and irritate the outer parts of the lung, causing inflammation and, over the years, pulmonary fibrosis that is thickening and scarring of lung tissue. An extended period, sometimes 20 years or more, may elapse between exposure to the dust and onset of the disease. 

Breathlessness is the main symptom of asbestosis and silicosis and it becomes increasingly severe as the disease develops. There may also be a dry cough and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Eventually, respiratory failure develops.
